Overview
Google began building its first Norwegian data centre at Skien in February 2024 with EUR 600 million and 240 MW allocated for the first phase, and plans to reuse the heat. Stargate Norway at Kvandal outside Narvik is planned by Nscale with Aker and OpenAI for 230 MW, with an ambition of 290 MW more.
Grid context
NVE describes about 10 GW of reserved and queued data centre capacity in the Statnett grid, far above current use.

Capacity in tracked public coverage
Tracked public coverage, not a national total. Sums of reported, project-level figures from 0 of the 2 published project records we track for Norway. Each metric and each delivery class is summed on its own and never added to another. Confirmed operating capacity never includes design or ultimate capacity. Delayed projects are never counted as under construction now. Campus and phase figures are not double counted. Ranges and upper bounds are not summed. Unknown values are not counted as zero.
None of the tracked project records for Norway has a figure that can be summed yet. Figures with an unclear basis and undisclosed values are never added. Each project page lists its reported figures as published. Not disclosed is not zero.
Figures not counted (4) and why
- Google Skien data centre (Gromstul, Telemark)
- Grid connection 240 MW: Marked not summable by research: Power allocated for phase one. Not IT load
- Investment EUR 600 million: Marked not summable by research: Investment in EUR millions
- Stargate Norway (Kvandal, Narvik)
- Other 230 MW: Basis unclear (not stated as IT, facility, grid or thermal). Never summed.
- Other 290 MW: Basis unclear (not stated as IT, facility, grid or thermal). Never summed.
Method: capacity rules. Company-wide investment, area figures and third-party market estimates are never included in these sums.
