Welcome to the first CoolPower Briefing. CoolPower Index is an independent data centre intelligence portal, from grid to rack. We track power and cooling news, research, events, costs and suppliers from primary sources, vendor-neutral, with a link to every original.

Power and cooling news

  • Nidec shows a 3.2 MW in-row CDU prototype ready for 800 V DC (14 Oct). The NIR3.0 was shown at OCP Global Summit 2026, with mass production targeted for H1 2027. Source: Nidec (opens in a new tab)
  • Cooler Master unveils a 2,500 kW liquid-to-liquid in-row CDU (16 Oct). Rated at 990 GPM, with mass production targeted for Q4 2026. Source: Data Centre Magazine (opens in a new tab)
  • Clivet presents a magnetic-bearing centrifugal compressor for AI data centres (16 Oct). The Midea brand claims up to 40% lower compressor power at the same cooling capacity, a vendor figure. Source: PR Newswire APAC (opens in a new tab)
  • LS Electric wins a $138.5m switchgear order for a fuel cell powered data centre in Pennsylvania (14 Oct). It covers 38kV switchgear and transformers for Bloom Energy fuel cells, delivering April to July 2027. Source: DCD (opens in a new tab)
  • Venture Global signs a framework for up to 16 power islands with GE Vernova and Baker Hughes (15 Oct). The equipment would serve LNG operations and potential adjacent data centres, with deliveries from 2028 to 2034. Source: Baker Hughes (opens in a new tab)

Innovation and R&D

  • Prototype: NC State tests a 1 MW solid-state transformer on a live distribution feeder. With NYPA and EPRI, the team reports about 2% conversion loss against about 4% for a conventional transformer plus rectifier. Source: NC State ECE (opens in a new tab)
  • Pilot: UC San Diego to field test solid-state transformers feeding 800 V DC AI compute. Two Alderbuck units will take the 12 kV campus supply to 800 V DC for two megawatts of AI compute. Savings quoted are projections. Source: SDSC (opens in a new tab)
  • Pilot: Keppel and Shell test a gas-to-liquids immersion fluid in an operating data centre. The 12-month testbed runs at a Keppel facility. Quoted efficiency figures are Shell benchmarks, not pilot results. Source: Keppel (opens in a new tab)
