Hitachi, Brookfield, Hartree and Tokyo Gas to develop green data centres with on-site generation in Japan

What changed

Hitachi announced on 19 October 2026 that it, Brookfield Japan, Hartree Partners Singapore and Tokyo Gas signed a memorandum of understanding on 30 September to develop green data centres in Japan. The MoU adds Tokyo Gas to an earlier three-party MoU announced in July 2025. The partners will explore a standardised model that uses on-site generation as the primary power source, combined with battery storage and grid power, with redundancy across cooling and power distribution and modular buildings and power plant equipment. Decarbonisation requirements may include carbon credits, environmental attributes and renewable energy. As first projects, the partners will run due diligence and draw up development plans for sites in the Kanto and Kyushu regions. No capacity, investment or dates were given.

Why it matters Editorial analysis

Grid connection lead times are pushing power-integrated campus designs in more markets, and Japan now has a utility-scale gas supplier inside one of these partnerships. A design where on-site plant is primary and the grid is backup changes how switchgear, protection, generation redundancy and cooling plant are specified. Note that the decarbonisation route described leans partly on offsets and certificates, not only on low-carbon generation.

Questions a buyer should ask

  • What on-site generation technology and fuel are proposed for the Kanto and Kyushu sites, and with what redundancy?
  • How will the grid connection be sized if on-site plant is the primary source?
  • Which share of the decarbonisation claim would come from offsets or certificates rather than physical low-carbon supply?
